"A-myo-trophic comes from the Greek language. "A" means no or negative. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "Trophic" means nourishment–"No muscle nourishment." When a muscle has no nourishment, it "atrophies" or wastes away. "Lateral" identifies the areas in a person's spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates it leads to scarring or hardening ("sclerosis") in the region." ~~ ALS Association
ALS ~~ Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, resulting in muscle weakness and atrophy.
Symptoms vary from person to person, but many times, people are left with the inability to communicate with their loved ones. Simple tasks we take for granted everyday; drinking, eating, speaking, are never the same. Patients affected by ALS, often become speech impaired due to the muscle loss in and around the mouth.

"HelpMeSpeak cards are providing a break-through in eliminating frustrations and improving the care experience for incapacitated patients like me who need a high level of assistance but cannot speak to communicate their needs. The cards are designed to help patients easily communicate basic care needs in a hospital, nursing facility or home setting, thus making them more comfortable and helping their caregivers do their jobs more effectively." -Paul Henderson, ALS patient, diagnosed in 2005Place a pre-order, request more information through the HelpMeSpeak website.
