JADE HEART, the new drama by Chicago Dramatists Senior Network Playwright Will Cooper, tells the funny and touching personal journey of a Chinese girl who grows up in a white, middle-class American home after being abandoned by her birth mother. A moving play about the tie between mothers and daughters, both adoptive and blood, JADE HEART captures the ageless question of identity and heritage.
Cooper’s script also inherently touches on China’s controversial one-child policy which, since 1979, has prevented some 250 million births, saving China from accommodating a population explosion but not without a grave social cost. Among the law’s negative consequences, together with forced fines and abortions, is the sexual discrimination of the culturally preferable male births over females.Actress Christine Bunuan (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (National Tour by David Stone Productions), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, A Christmas Carol (Goodman Theater), Beauty and the Beast, and Peter Pan The Musical (Chicago Shakespeare Theater), Aladdin (Marriott Theatre), Miss Saigon (Drury Lane Oakbrook)) stars as Jade McCullough.
